Lately, I’ve been buying a TON of produce because I’ve been making green smoothies every morning. (Which, by the way, is an amazing way to get all your fruits + veggies in for the day. I feel so much better since I started making green smoothies every day).
Last week I bought a bag full of cherries and was so excited to show Pierce. A couple of days went by and the cherries were still sitting on the counter, un-open and uneaten. I came to the conclusion that the reason we weren’t eating the cherries was because of the pits. We were either too lazy or too busy to bother eating the cherries because the pits were getting in the way… that’s the pits, isn’t it?! (ha, I’m funny)
So, I looked online and nothing could be found, but then I came across an instagram feed that talked about easy ways to pit cherries. Done.
Luckily I found everything I needed, even if I did have to substitute a Camelbak water bottle straw for the chopsticks that were recommended. But the straw worked just fine!
What you need:
- Glass bottle: I used a Coke bottle
- Chopstick or sturdy straw – a regular straw will definitely not get the job done
*I also used a colander to rinse the cherries in and a bowl to catch the cherry juice once they were pitted. I used the cherry juice in my smoothie!
How to pit a cherry:
- Remove stems from cherries
- Place cherry on top of bottle, poke chopstick or hard plastic straw through cherry, depositing the pit at the bottom of the bottle
(make sure the bottom-half of the cherry doesn’t get sucked into/pushed into the bottle. I had that happen a few times.)
I kept half in the fridge for us to eat and froze the rest for green smoothies. Once you take the stem off and remove the pit from the cherry, it goes bad faster, so make sure to eat up!
And yes, it will look like you just slaughtered something in your kitchen afterwards (and the cherry juice does stain) but it’s totally worth it!
There are also recipes online on how to use the cherry pits that were just removed… I just threw mine away, I’m not that good yet.
